WS-3, full name N-Ethyl-2-isopropyl-5-methylcyclohexanecarboxamide, is a synthetic long-lasting cooling agent. Basically, it delivers pure cooling sensation for finished products. It is not a functional skincare active ingredient, but most cooling personal care and oral care formulas cannot work well without it.
It works by activating human cold receptors to produce mild physical cooling effects. Different from traditional menthol with strong mint odor, spicy irritation, short cooling time and poor heat resistance, WS-3 provides odor-free and non-irritating coolness. It features low volatility and excellent thermal stability, so it will not fail during high-temperature production. Besides, it will not cover the original fragrance of products, and can effectively relieve skin hotness and oral discomfort.
The typical addition dosage of WS-3 in cosmetics ranges from 0.05% to 0.3%. Too little leads to weak cooling effect, while excessive dosage causes uncomfortable numbness.
