1. Introduction
People who source botanical ingredients run into a few "sounds great on paper" ingredients every year. Ellagic acid is one of them. It is found in common foods like pomegranates, raspberries, and walnuts. Its antioxidant activity in vitro can beat several well-known antioxidants. But if you ask formulators about ellagic acid, many will sigh – not because it doesn't work, but because it is a pain to handle.
Ellagic acid has very poor water solubility. How poor? At room temperature, it is practically insoluble in water. If you want to put it into a serum or toner and just add the powder directly, you will get precipitation, clumping, and uneven distribution. On top of that, it is sensitive to light, heat, and pH changes, so stability is also an issue. Another study showed that at a low concentration of 1.0 μg/mL, ellagic acid increased type I collagen synthesis by 41%, very close to the 39% achieved by ascorbic acid. In vitro experiments also confirmed that it inhibits TNF-α-induced MAPK phosphorylation, downregulates COX-2, and upregulates HO-1 – in simple terms, it does a lot of useful work at the cellular level.

2. What Can Ellagic Acid Actually Do?
Ellagic acid has the molecular formula C₁₄H₆O₈, MW 302.19. Its polyphenolic structure is the basis for its activity.
Antioxidant. Its highly hydroxylated structure efficiently captures free radicals. A 2024 in vitro study on human red blood cells showed that ellagic acid treatment significantly reduced oxidative damage to cell membranes, lowered hemolysis, and increased levels of endogenous antioxidants like SOD and glutathione. In vivo studies also confirmed that it reduces malondialdehyde – a marker of oxidative damage.
Anti-inflammatory. Ellagic acid blocks the NF-κB pathway, inhibiting the release of pro-inflammatory cytokines IL-1β, IL-6, and TNF-α, while upregulating the anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-10. In animal fever models, it significantly reduced body temperature and inflammatory markers. In human skin fibroblasts, it also inhibited TNF-α-induced MAPK phosphorylation, downregulated COX-2, and upregulated HO-1. The anti-inflammatory mechanism is reasonably clear.
Anti-photoaging and collagen protection. UV exposure activates matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), which break down collagen and elastin. Ellagic acid inhibits MMP synthesis, thereby reducing wrinkle formation. This mechanism was reported as early as 2009. A 2025 review also confirmed that ellagic acid's antioxidant action protects the skin from photoaging and improves elasticity and wrinkles.

Cosmetics is currently the largest market for ellagic acid. About 49% of new skincare products contain ellagic acid, with formats expanding from serums and creams to eye creams and sunscreens.

Prodrug strategy. Using ellagitannins as precursors – these are more water-soluble and slowly hydrolyse to release ellagic acid in the skin or gut, providing a "slow-release" effect.

6. Regulatory Status
China market. Ellagic acid is listed in the NMPA "Catalogue of Used Cosmetic Raw Materials (2021 Edition)" as a skin whitening agent and antioxidant – no new ingredient registration required. It is also included in GB 2760 as an antioxidant for certain food categories (limits vary by category, from 0.01 to 0.05 g/kg).
