Description

Isopropyl Palmitate (IPP)

Have you ever applied a lotion and thought, "Wow, that just disappeared into my skin"? No greasy residue. No sticky film. Just… gone. You can thank Isopropyl Palmitate.

IPP is a light, fast‑spreading emollient ester. Chemically, it's the isopropyl alcohol ester of palmitic acid (a common saturated fatty acid found in palm oil). It's not an active ingredient - it doesn't brighten, exfoliate, or fight wrinkles. What it does is much more subtle, but absolutely essential: it makes your formula feel good.

The "Glide Factor": IPP has very low viscosity (thin, like water), spreads instantly across the skin, leaves no oily after‑feel, and evaporates slowly. This creates the sensation of "rapid absorption" - even though IPP itself isn't actually absorbing; it's simply spreading into a thin, uniform film.

IPP vs. Other Esters (The Ester Family)

EsterMolecular WeightViscositySpreadabilitySkin Feel
Isopropyl Palmitate (IPP)298.5Very lowExcellentDry, light, nongreasy
Isopropyl Myristate (IPM)270.5Extremely lowSuperbVery dry, can be comedogenic
Cetyl Palmitate480.8High (waxy solid)PoorWaxy, heavy (for balms)
Ethylhexyl Palmitate368.6LowGoodSlightly oily, soft
📦 Format Note: Isopropyl Palmitate is a clear, colorless to pale yellow oily liquid - not a powder. If you need a solid form, consider cetyl palmitate or other wax esters.

The Comedogenic Question: IPP has a comedogenic rating of 3–4 (on a scale of 0–5). Use in body lotions, sunscreens, and rinse‑off products (low risk). Avoid in facial products for oily/acne‑prone skin.

Benefits of Isopropyl Palmitate (IPP)

01Lightweight Emollient

IPP softens and smooths the skin without leaving a heavy, greasy residue. Fills micro‑cracks between skin cells for an instantly silky feel.

02Fast Spreading & "Dry" Feel

Very low viscosity (8–12 cP) - spreads instantly across skin, evaporates slowly, and creates the sensation of "rapid absorption." No oily after‑feel.

03Excellent Solvent for Oil‑Soluble Actives

Dissolves sunscreens, vitamins (vitamin E), fragrance oils, and preservatives. Ensures even dispersion and uniform film formation.

04Non‑Occlusive - Won't Suffocate Skin

Unlike mineral oil or petrolatum, IPP does not form a heavy barrier. Softens without sealing, making it ideal for "light" moisturizers and lotions.

05Reduces Tackiness & Drag

Counteracts sticky ingredients (glycerin, hyaluronic acid, aloe vera). Improves spreadability and glide in creams, serums, and foundations.

06Excellent Oxidative Stability

Saturated ester (iodine value ≤1.0) - does not oxidize or go rancid. Shelf life of 36+ months under proper storage.

Application Fields

Skincare & Cosmetics (Primary Market): Facial moisturizers (2–5%), body lotions (5–10%), sunscreens (5–15%), foundations & BB creams (3–8%), lipsticks & lip glosses (5–20%), hair conditioners & serums (1–5%), body washes & cleansers (1–3%), makeup removers (10–20%).
Pharmaceutical: Topical corticosteroid creams/ointments, transdermal drug delivery vehicles, emollient bases for dermatological preparations.
OEM Finished Products: Light moisturizing face lotion, dry touch sunscreen SPF 30, silky foundation, body gloss/shower oil, lightweight face oil - full custom manufacturing available.

FAQ

Q1: Is isopropyl palmitate safe for skin?
A: Yes - for most skin types. Non‑toxic, non‑irritating (at typical use levels), and non‑sensitizing. FDA considers it safe (GRAS). However, it has a comedogenic rating of 3–4, so it may clog pores in acne‑prone individuals. Patch test before full facial use.
Q2: Does isopropyl palmitate cause acne?
A: It can - if you are prone to clogged pores. IPP mimics human sebum triglycerides, which can over‑hydrate follicles and trap dead skin cells. If you have oily or acne‑prone skin, avoid IPP in facial products. For dry, mature, or body skin, it's usually fine.
Q3: What's the difference between isopropyl palmitate and isopropyl myristate?
A: IPP is palmitic acid (C16) ester - slightly heavier, slightly lower comedogenicity. IPM is myristic acid (C14) ester - lighter, spreads faster, more volatile, and more comedogenic (rating 4–5). IPM is worse for acne. Choose IPP over IPM if you need a light ester.
Q4: Is isopropyl palmitate natural?
A: No - semi‑synthetic. Palmitic acid can be derived from natural sources (palm, coconut), but esterification with isopropyl alcohol is a chemical process. Ecocert does not consider IPP "natural." Check with your certifier.
Q5: Is isopropyl palmitate vegan?
A: Yes - if derived from vegetable sources (palm, coconut) and not from animal tallow. Our standard grade is vegetable‑derived. No animal products.
Q6: What concentration should I use in my formula?
A: Light lotion (face): 2–5%; Body lotion: 5–10%; Sunscreen: 5–15%; Foundation: 3–8%; Lipstick: 5–20%; Anhydrous body oil: 10–30%.
Q7: Is isopropyl palmitate greasy?
A: No - it has a "dry" feel. One of the least greasy emollients. Spreads rapidly, leaves almost no oily residue. Popular in "oil‑free" and "matte" formulations.
Q8: Can isopropyl palmitate be used in lip products?
A: Yes - common in lipsticks, glosses, and balms. Reduces waxy, heavy feel of beeswax. Use at 5–20%.
Q9: Is isopropyl palmitate safe during pregnancy?
A: Yes - topical use at cosmetic concentrations is considered safe. Very low systemic absorption. No known teratogenic effects.
Q10: What is the shelf life of isopropyl palmitate?
A: 36 months in original sealed container under cool, dry conditions (≤25°C, ≤60% RH). Saturated ester - does not oxidize easily. For cosmetics, replace after 24–36 months.
Q11: Can isopropyl palmitate be used in anhydrous (oil‑only) formulas?
A: Yes - blends perfectly with jojoba, squalane, fractionated coconut oil, mineral oil. Use to lighten heavier oils.
Q12: Why does my isopropyl palmitate sometimes smell faintly of alcohol?
A: Residual isopropyl alcohol from synthesis. Our high‑purity grade has ≤0.02% free isopropanol (barely detectable). Strong alcohol smell indicates low quality - discard.
