Carbomer 980 is a benzene-free crosslinked polyacrylic acid homopolymer (USP/NF Type C). It is synthesized by crosslinking polymerization of acrylic acid with allyl sucrose or pentaerythritol allyl ether. Manufactured via a safe co-solvent process using ethyl acetate and cyclohexane, it has benzene residue ≤0.5 ppm, boasting a higher safety grade than conventional benzene-processed Carbomer 940. It appears as fluffy, white, hygroscopic fine powder with a faint acetic acid odor. Its pH value in pure water dispersion is approximately 3. Upon neutralization with alkalis such as triethanolamine and sodium hydroxide, it rapidly swells to form a highly transparent gel system.
